Canton, NY — The Owls traveled down to New York to face off against North Atlantic Conference opponent SUNY Canton. The Owls were able to walk away with a win with a final score of 63-52 vs the NAC cross-divisional opponent. This win advances the team to 5-3 overall this season and 1-2 in the NAC.
After a slow start to the game, the Owls led after the first quarter 10-8 and would continue to lead the rest of the game. In the second quarter, Alexis Ireland (Howland, ME) scored six points and grabbed five rebounds to help the Owls extend their lead, and would continue on to led UMPI throughout the second half of the game.An impressive defensive showing by the Owls in the first half held the Roos to only 17 points in the first 20-minutes. Freshman Lauren Magno (Bowdoinham, ME) would help add five points in the third quarter to give the team an eight point lead going into the fourth quarter, despite the Roos winning the third quarter 20-18.
The Owls were led by Ireland who totaled 22 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 7-12 from the field and 8-12 from the free throw line. Rebecca Davila (El Paso, TX) finished the game with 12 points while adding seven rebounds.
The Owls will face off against SUNY Canton again tomorrow, January 9th at 12:00pm.
