Presque Isle, ME – The Owls women's basketball team hosted the North Atlantic Conference pre-season number one seed Husson University Eagles. This was their second game of the year, as they faced off this past Saturday in Bangor. The Owls slow start put them behind early and not able to bring the game back, losing 66-45.
With the Owls defensive intensity high, bouncing back from their defeat last game, they held the Eagles to just 15 points in the first quarter. The teams went back and forth early in the quarter as Husson led 7-5 with just over five minutes left in the first. The Eagles stepped up their defense, not allowing the Owls to score for the remainder of the quarter. Looking to bounce back offensively the Owls lost the second quarter by a much closer margin, 15-12. Now going into halftime down 30-17. The Owls were able to get their offense going in the third, scoring 16 points in the 10 minutes, although the Eagles offense also improved as they increased their lead, scoring 24 in the third. Husson was able to take it from there finishing the game while holding that 21-point lead.
Senior Emily Wheaton (Presque Isle, ME) got it going from deep for the Owls shooting 5-8 from the three on the night, finishing the game 6-10 from the field with 17 points. Alexis Ireland (Howland, ME) finished with nine points and five rebounds, shooting 50% from the field. Mariah Dunbar (Canaan, ME) led the bench scoring, finishing with seven points.
The Owls will finish their first semester play with a game vs the University of Maine at Augusta Moose. The Owls will host this match up, Friday December 10 at 7:30PM.
