Farmington, ME – The UMPI Owls women's basketball team traveled to the University of Farmington to play in the annual NAC vs GNAC classic. The Owls faced off against Lasell University in their first match up, and their second game of the season. The Owls advanced to a 2-0 start after beating Lasell in a 81-70 win.
The Owls started the game with a late first quarter run giving them an early six-point lead after the first 10 minutes of the game. An answer by Lasell gave them a quick lead in the second quarter before the Owls were able to gain back the lead late in the second quarter off a three by Emily Wheaton (Presque Isle, ME) and a layup by Jelecia Ma'Gee-Hodge (Killeen, TX) to give them a two-point lead going into the half. The Owls took control in the third quarter, led by Wheaton's 10-point quarter off 2-3 shooting from the field and 2-2 from three, along with a couple free throws. This 25-12 run in the third propelled the Owls to a victory.
Wheaton finished the game, leading all scorers with 22 points, shooting 5-12 from the field, 3-7 from the three and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line. Alexis Ireland (Howland, ME) once again came off the bench to with a double-double, finishing with 15 points, going 9-11 from the free throw line and ten rebounds. Ma'Gee-Hodges and Mariah Dunbar (Canaan, ME) each finished with 11 points.
