Presque Isle, ME – The Owls start their season 1-0 after a statement win over Aroostook County opponent University of Maine at Fort Kent. The Women's basketball team starting their season with an 85-69 win.
With the Owls in control early, they never looked back as their stellar offense allowed them to get any shot they wanted. The Owls finished the game shooting 47.8% from the field with six players in double figures. Some back and forth play early brought the game to 13 each with just over three minutes left in the first quarter. It was then where the Owls made their first run, it was a, 11-5 run to give them some momentum going into the second quarter. A quick run by the Bengals brought them within three, as the score sat at 26-23 with 7:30 left in the first half. The Owls then put up an impressive 22-4 run to give them a 19-point lead at the half. The second half the Owls were able to hold off any run that the Bengals made, as they kept their lead right near the 20-point mark for the remainder of the game.
With a number of impressive stats the Owls Jelecia Ma'Gee-Hodges (Killeen, TX) and Hunter Mercier (Fairfield, ME), each with 13 points, led the Owls scorers. Ma'Gee-Hodges also finished with seven rebounds, while shooting 6-11 from the field. Mercier's 13 points came off 4-8 shooting and 3-4 from the free throw line. Paige Espling (Caribou, ME) finished with a double-double, 11 points and ten rebounds off 5-9 shooting along with four blocked shots. Mariah Dubar (Canaan, ME) also finished with 11 point while Emily Wheaton (Presque Isle, ME) and Alexis Ireland (Howland, ME) rounded out the double figure scoring for UMPI, with ten points each.
Next up: The Owls will head to the University of Maine at Farmington as they host their annual NAC vs GNAC tournament. UMPI will take on Lasell on Friday, November 19 at 5:30PM and Rivier Saturday November 20 at 1:00PM.
