Autumn Paul to Play at UMPI

Presque Isle, ME – Ellsworth High School senior Autumn Paul has been accepted to attend The University of Maine at Presque Isle in the fall of 2021 and has made a verbal commitment to play Women's Basketball for the Owls.

Paul, a 6'0" center for the Eagles was noticed by UMPI Coach Gavin Kane when he saw the Ellsworth team play on several occasions a year ago while recruiting a then senior teammate of hers. "I saw potential in Autumn as a college player and I have been focused on bringing in a post player from her 2021 Class," said Kane. "When I reached out to Coach Pooler, he was very helpful in getting me connected with Autumn and we hit it off quite well right from the start. She seemed very interested in looking into our University from the beginning and was excited that we wanted her to be a part of our Basketball Program. We offer the Academic Program that she is interested in and she has been eager become part of our UMPI Family."

"Autumn is a dedicated student athlete who proves valuable to any program," stated High School Coach Andy Pooler. "She has progressed nicely over four years turning herself into a consistent low post threat.  A fantastic student gaining highest honors multiple times shows her dedication in the classroom.  She will provide UMPI with a physical presence under the hoop to help dominate the boards." Autumn helped her Ellsworth team to a 10-8 record in the 2019-2020 season and to a Prelim Tournament game vs. rival MDI. The Eagles are 5 and 4 this year in the Covid shortened season.

Coach Kane added, "Autumn shows a nice skill set in the low post. I like how she finishes inside very comfortably with either hand. She does a great job with the inside-out game, recognizing when she needs to kick the ball back out to the perimeter and she locates her teammates very well who are three point shooters. What I really liked and picked up on first, is how aware she is in their team defense. She is always in proper help-side position, communicates with her teammates, and then goes to the boards well. That is a reflection of the coaching she has received as well as her understanding of the game."

Paul will be majoring in Biology and has an interest in Zoology. "What drew me to UMPI was the prospect of being able to continue my basketball career at the collegiate level and it was a dream come true. I'm looking forward to playing for UMPI and the chance to play with some girls I have only played against in high school, and I will also get the chance to enhance my ability to play my position at the next level.  What I'm looking forward to with my academic major in Biology, is that I hope to work with animals in my future profession and UMPI offered me a good place to begin my college education," said Paul.
