Presque Isle, ME - The Owls Women's basketball team opened their season traveling to Husson University in a non-conference game. This was UMPI first basketball game in nearly a year, and the first women's division III college game played in the state of Maine, for the 2020-21 season. The Owls young roster put up a good fight through the first half, but eventually fell 70-50.
Through the first half the Owls sharp shooting in the first quarter helped them stay close with the Eagles, as Husson put up 23 points in the first quarter. Thanks to Mariah Dunbar's (Canaan, ME) eight-point first quarter, she led the Owls to an 18-point first quarter. The Owls picked up the defense in the second quarter holding the Eagles to only 13 points, keeping them close within range of the Eagles. At the start of the 3rd quarter the Owls trailed by 3, 33-36, then took the lead early in the quarter.
Husson soon picked up their defense causing six UMPI turnovers, and holding the Owls to 4-10 shooting and only nine points in the third. In the 4th quarter the Eagles continued to pull away eventually winning, 70-50.
First year player Lexi Ireland (Howland, ME) led the Owls in scoring with 13 points, adding six rebounds and three steals while also going 4-4 from the free throw line. Emily Wheaton (Presque Isle, ME) finished with ten points, four rebounds, and four assists. Not far behind was sophomore Dunbar, finishing with nine points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
The Owl's collectively shot 75% from the free throw line and finished with 11 assists on the night. The Eagles were led by Bailey Donovan who finished with 34 points and 21 rebounds.
The Owls will look to play more games this season, including a match up next weekend. More details on the game will be on the Owls Athletics website next week.
