Canton, NY - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball Team avenged a Friday night loss to the SUNY Canton Roos with a 77 to 61 victory on Saturday afternoon in Canton, New York. As cold as the Owls were shooting in Friday night's game, they came out in this game with a much more consistent offensive effort while shooting 39% from the field and 46% from behind the 3 point arc.
The 2nd of back to back weekend games between the North Atlantic Conference foes saw UMPI leading by a slim margin 16 to 13 after the 1st quarter of play. A Sarah Musselman (So. Turlock, CA) layup 1 minute into the game got the Owls on the board early. Hunter Mercier drained a 3 pointer from the right wing a couple of minutes later to give UMPI a 5 to 4 lead. A Mariah Dunbar (Fr. Canaan, ME) layup on an assist from Marissa Valdivia Reagle and 1 foul shot by Taylor Miller gave the Owls an 8 to 4 advantage before the two teams traded hoops the rest of the quarter.
UMPI increased there lead slightly in the 2nd quarter by outscoring the Roos 18 to 12. Kylie Vining drilled a 3 pointer from the right wing and Reagle and Sierra Fay (Fr. Wilton, ME) each connected on 2 free throws as the Owls moved out to a 24 to 13 lead and went into the half up 34 to 25.
Taylor Miller started the scoring in the 3rd period with a mid-range jumper and then scored inside on a nifty pass from Hunter Mercier. Mercier (So. Fairfield, ME) later drained three 3 pointers in the quarter and Dunbar nailed one as ME-Presque Isle moved ahead 58 to 43 to close out the 3rd frame.
SUNY Canton chiseled away at the UMPI lead in the 4th quarter and got themselves back to within 8 points before the Owls salted the game away with just under 3 minutes to go. Hunter Mercier paced UMPI with 24 points on 8 of 13 shooting from behind the 3 point line while adding 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Taylor Miller (Jr. Weeki Wachee, FL) scored 14 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and had 4 block shots while Kylie Vining (Fr. Island Falls, ME) was a big spark with 14 points and 3 rebounds. Marissa Valdivia Reagle (Jr. Seattle, WA) had an outstanding game and was one point shy of a triple-double notching 9 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. Joie Culkin had 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Autumn Watkins added 15 points for the Roos.
