Cold Shooting Owls Drop 1st of 2 Games at SUNY Canton

Canton, NY - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball Team was as cold shooting as the frigid outside temperatures in Canton, New York on Friday night as the SUNY Canton Roos held off a second half rally by the Owls on their way to a 52 to 39 North Atlantic Conference win.

UMPI shot a woeful 16 for 74 from the floor (21.6%) including 4 for 28 from behind the 3 point arc. The Owls also didn't help themselves from the foul line hitting on only 3 of 12 foul shots. Trailing by only 3 points, 14 to 11, after the 1st quarter, the Owls could only muster three points in the entire 2nd quarter as a Team. The Roos carrid a 30 to 14 lead into the halftime break.

UMPI picked up their defensive intensity throughout most of the 3rd period and narrowed the Roos lead to 7 points on two different occasions but could not get closer with continued cold shooting. The Owls outscored SUNY Canton 12 to 8 in the quarter.

Maine-Presque Isle could not put together a significant enough run in the final frame again getting the lead down to 7 points before falling by the final score 52 to 39.

Mariah Dunbar (Fr. Canaan, ME) led the Owls in scoring with 12 points while grabbing 8 rebounds and adding 2 steals. Point guard Sarah Musselman (So. Turlock, CA) scored 11 points. Joie Culkin had a big game for SUNY Canton with 19 points and 24 rebounds. Autumn Watkins added 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists.

The same two teams will battle again tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
