Presque Isle, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball Team was looking for a home victory before the Thanksgiving Break but the Clippers from UMaine-Machias came into Wieden Hall Gymnasium on Monday night and left with a 69 to 58 win.
The Owls came out of the gate shooting tha ball well and grabbed an a quick 2 to 0 lead on a Mariah Dunbar (Fy. Canaan, ME) offensive rebound and put back. The Clipppers Caitlyn Lyons drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner and followed that with 3 free throws and a 5 to 2 UMM advantage. Hunter Mercier (So. Fairfield, ME) drained a 3-pointer on a feed from Marissa Valdivia Reagle (Jr. Seattle, WA) to tie the game. Later in the quarter at the 4:53 mark, point guard Sarah Musselman (So. Turlock, CA) hit Mercier on the wing for another 3-pointer and the Owls took a 14 to 9 lead. UMPI would then go cold from the floor and trailed 24 to 16 after one quarter of play.
The Owls continued to struggle to find the net early in the 2nd frame as did the Clipprs, before Lyons drained another 3-pointer giving UMM a 27 to 14 advantage. An Alexis Levesque (Sr. Madawaska, ME) 3-pointer on an assist from Mussselman, followed shortly by a driving layup from Musselman cut the Clippers lead to 29 to 23. Levesque hit a mid-range jumper to cut into the lead some more before UMM center Tate Dolley connected on a jumper in the lane. UMPI would go almost another 3 minutes without scoring and ME-Machias took a 40 to 30 lead into the half.
UMPI scored first in the 3rd quarter on a pullup jumper by Musselman before Cassie Wilcoxson knocked down a long 3-pointer from the right wing. The Owls would trail by 11 points when Dunbar connected on 2 free throws and Taylor Miller (Jr. Weeki Wachee, FL) hit a jumper on a pass from Dunbar. A Levesque drive and layup closed the 3rd period scoring with the visitors up 54 to 45.
ME-Presque Isle came out trapping in the 4th quarter and turned the Clippers over on numerous occassions. With 7:42 remaining in the game Miller hit a right baseline 3-pointer to bring UMPI within 4 points 56 to 52. Caitlyn Lyons would bury a baseline 3-pointer to break the Owls momentum. UMPI would continue to battle and cut into the lead but Machias (4-2) was able to hold off the Owls down the stretch and pull away for a 69 to 58 victory.
For the University of Maine at Presque Isle (1-4) Musselman led the way in scoring with 15 points. Musselman also added 6 assists and 4 rebounds. Both Miller and Mercier scored 11 points for the Owls with Mercier contributing 5 rebounds. Dunbar led the team in rebounding with 7 boards while scoring 7 points and dishing out 7 assists while Alexis Levesque (Sr. Grand Isle, ME) contributed 11 points. UMPI shot just 23 for 73 from the floor including 7 for 26 from the 3-point line.
Lyons paced the Clippers with 23 points while Dolley added 22 points and picked up a game-high 17 rebounds.
Next up: The Owls travel to Vermont to play in a 2-day Tournament at Norwich University on December 6th and 7th.
