Presque Isle, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball Team only trailed a highly regarded UMFK (21-5) team by six points entering the final quarter but the Bengals caught fire and opened up the game midway through the 4th period on their way to a 69 to 45 win at Wieden Hall Gymnasium on the UMaine-Presque Isle Campus.
Emmy Churchill (Jr. Washburn, ME) scored the first 5 points of the game for the Owls on an elbow jumper and then a 3 pointer at the 4:30 mark to pull UMPI within one point 5 to 4. Me-Presque Isle would get a score inside by Rhylee Wright on an assist from Sarah Musselman, and then Musselman would hit fellow freshman Hunter Mercier with a pass that led directly to a 3 pointer by Mercier and a 9 to 5 UMPI lead. Junior forward Ivette Truilllo connected on two free throws and and a jumper to bring the Bengals to within 9 to 8. Lauren Lacey would hit two foul shots and Tajaheray McMahan drained a 3 pointer late to give UMFK a 13 to 9 advantage after one quarter of play.
UMPI would go down 16 to 9 early in the 2nd period before Wright would score on an assist from Marisaa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) and Sarah Musselman (Fr. Turlock, CA) would score on a nice drive to the hoop to close the gap to 16 to 13. Rhylee Wright would knock down a 3 pointer on a pass from Mercier that tied the game at 16 apiece at the 7:37 mark. A Musselman layup gave the Owls a quick lead before the Bengals Alyse Kline followed with a score on a drive to the rim. A Churchill jumper and a subsequent steal by Mercier and feed to Churchill for a layup put UMPI up 24 to 21. The lead switched hands a couple of more times when UMFK's Alyse Kline scored on two layups before Valdivia-Reagle broke free for the Owls and dropped in a layup with 10 seconds remaining and a 26 to 25 lead that the Owls took into halftime.
Trinity Washington scored on a layup just seven seconds into the 3rd quarter and Washington followed that up with a 3 pointer to give the Bengals a 30 to 26 lead. Kendra Silvers woud hit a 15 foot jumper for UMPI a couple of minutes later and Wright would drop in two free throws and the Owls would trail 32 to 30 at the 6:13 mark. UMFK would go up 39 to 33 before Valdivia-Reagle would make two foul shots. The Bengals would grab their largest lead 44 to 35 late in the 3rd quarter but Musselman would drain a 3 pointer on an assist from Churchill to end the quarter with UMFK leading 44 to 38.
Two Madison Fenner 3 pointers and a Trinity Washington layup opened up the game for UMFK as they surged to a 52 to 38 advantage in the 4th quarter. UMaine-Fort Kent would go up by 19 points before Kendra Silvers connected on a jumper but the Owls could not cut into the Bengals lead with a cold shooting 4th period.
Sarah Musselman and Rhylee Wright paced UMPI offensively with 12 points each, and Musselman added 4 rebounds and 2 assists and Wright pulled down 8 boards. Churchil scored 6 points, had 3 steals and 3 assists. Silvers scored 6 points, and Mercier netted 5 points along with 4 rebounds.
UMFK was led by Trinity Washington with 16 points and a game-high 10 assists and Tajaheray added 13 points. alyse Kline and Madison Fenner chipped in with 11 points each.
The Owls finished their season at 9-16 picking up 6 more wins then a season ago.
