Johnson, VT – The University of Maine-Presque Isle Women's Basketball Team traveled to Northern Vermont-Johnson University for the first of a two game weekend series against the Badgers and came away with a 67 to 59 road victory.
The Owls playng with just 7 players due to injuries, got contributions from all of their players on this night. Hunter Mercier (Fr. Fairfield, ME) hit the first bucket of the game on a pass from Sarah Musselman when she drained a 3 pointer from the wing. Two possessions later Emmy Churchill dished to Rhylee Wright (Jr. Frenchville, ME) who nailed a 3 point shot to put UMPI up 6 to 0. A Wright score inside at the 4:18 mark gave the Owls an 8 to 6 lead and a Musselman jumper tacked on 2 more. Marissa Valdivia-Reagle scored on a breakaway layup and Me-Presque Isle took a 12 to 9 lead into the quarter break.
Lyndsay LaPerle connected on a 3 pointer early in the 2nd quarter for NV Johnson to tie the game at 12 apiece. Two foul shots by Wright at the 8:55 mark and an Emmy Churchill jumper at 7:54 gave UMPI a 17 to 14 advantage. The Owls went up 22 to 17 on a Mercier 3 pointer on an assist from Reagle, and then Reagle added a steal and score. Two minutes later a Hunter Mercier floater in the lane and a Sarah Mussleman (Fr. Turlock, CA) 3 pointer had UMPI up 27 to 17. UMaine-Presque Isle would go into halftime ahead 32 to 21.
The 3rd quarter saw the Badgers fight back and eventually tie the game at 36 to 36 on two LaPerle free throws with 4:22 remaining in the period. A steal and layup by Wright and a Kendra Silvers (So. North Berwick, ME) jumper put the Owls up 42 to 39. Reagle picked off and pass and took it in for a layup and Mercier followed with another 3 pointer to increase the lead to 44 to 39. UMPI would get another Silvers hoop and a Reagle foul shot, and would enter the 4th quarter ahead 52 to 41.
Valdivia-Reagle and Silvers would both score again early in the 4th frame to give UMPI its biggest lead 56 to 41. Late in the quarter Mariah Ramos of NV Johnson would hit a 3 to pull the Badgers within 67 to 59 but that would close out the scoring and UMPI would get a good team win in Vermont.
Wright scored 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Owls, Mercier added 18 points and 7 rebounds and Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) scored 13 points, had 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals. Point guard Sarah Mussleman chipped in with 7 points and 6 rebounds.
Mariah Ramos scored a game-high 23 points and had 6 boards for the Badgers while LaPerle added 19 points.
Next up: UMPI and NVU-Johnson will meet again on Saturday with a 3:00 PM tipoff.
