Presque Isle - The UMPI Owls (7-14, 2-9 NAC) were in much need of a win over North Atlantic Conference foe Thomas College (6-15, 5-6 NAC) to keep alive playoff aspirations on Saturday afternoon but the Terriers were able to hang on down the stretch for a 65 to 60 win.
After gaining an early lead in the opening quarter 8 to 5 on a Marissa Valdivia-Reagle steal and a 3 pointer from Rhylee Wright for the Owls, Thomas came right back to go up 11 to 8 when Addie Brinkman and Karli Stubbs both hit short jumpers and Mallory Weaver scored on a driving layup. The Terriers would never relinquish the lead throughout the remainder of the game despite numerous runs by Me-Presque Isle to close the gap. Thomas would lead 17 to 11 after the 1st quarter against the cold shooting Owls who hit for 26% for the period and only 32% for the game.
The Owls Rhylee Wright (Jr. Frenchville, ME) would score the first hoop of the 2nd quarter before a Thomas layup by Kelci Faulkingham and a 3 pointer by Nikkki Bradstreet upped the visitors lead 22 to 13. A Wright layup and jumper on an assist from Reagle brought UMPI to within 28 to 23 before Thomas scored on a Molly Horton breakaway layup at the buzzer and the Terriers led 30 to 23 at intermission.
Sarah Musselman (Fr. Turlock, CA) scored on a drive and a Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seatlle, WA) layup had UMPI down 34 to 27 at the 5:45 mark of the 3rd quarter. One minute later Thomas College would gain their largest lead of the game on a Molly Horton jumper from 15 feet and the Terriers led 39 to 27. A steal and two free throws by Reagle and a short jumper by Laura Aroz (Jr. Tucson, AZ) got the Owls within 42 to 36 with 26 seconds left in the period.
Reagle started the 4th quarter with a steal and a score to quickly trim the Thomas lead to 44 to 36. The Terriers would once again widen their margin before a made jumper and free throw by Wright got UMPI back within six points 47 to 41. With 6:26 left in the final frame, Molly Horton of Thomas drained a 3 pointer to put her team back up 11 points 52 to 41 before UMPI would fight back yet again. Hunter Mercier (Fr. Fairfield, ME) would nail a long 3 pointer and Musselman would connect on a jumper on a feed from Mercier to bring the Owls back to within six, 52 to 46. Mercier would drain another 3 on an assist from Musselman to close within five points but Thomas would get the lead back up to ten points with 1:16 to play. The Owls wouldn't go down without a fight and brought the score to 62 to 58 on a Musselman driving layup and made free throw. Two foul shots by Reagle had UMPI within one possession down just 63 to 60 with ten secondes remaining but Kaylee Ravagli of Thomas would connect on two foul shots for the final 65 to 60 score.
For Me-Presque Isle, Wright and Reagle would lead the team with 18 points apiece while Wright grabbed 12 rebounds and had 2 blocked shots. Reagle would pull down 7 rebounds, dish out 5 assists and recorded 8 steals for the game. Hunter Mercier scored 13 points, had 6 rebounds and 4 steals for UMPI in a solid game.
The Terriers were led by Molly Horton with 12 points and 6 assists, Kaylee Ravagli with 11 points, and Addie Brinkman with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
