Presque Isle, ME - It was going to be tough enough for the UMPI Owls Monday afternoon with Bowdoin College, the #1 Team in Division 3 Basketball in the Country, rolling into town with a 15 and 0 record and averaging 87 points per game. The Owls were also playing with a depleted roster due to illness and injury which made the task at hand even that much more difficult and the Polar Bears ran away with a 102 to 44 victory.
UMPI battled early in the game and found themselves trailing by only 6 points with jusst two minutes remaining in the 1st quarter before a 3 point shot by Presque Isle High School grad Hannah Graham made ith 20 to 11 Polar Bears and a Samantha Roy fast break layup and an Annie Maher layup closed the quarter with Bwodoin leading 24 to 11.
Point guard Sarah Musselman (Fr. Turlock, CA) hit two jumpers early in the 2nd quarter before going to keep the Owls within reach of Bowdoin until a 17 to 2 Polar Bear run put the game out of reach before the half.
Bowdoin had six players score in double figures led by Maddie Hasson of South Portland, ME and Hannah Graham with 15 points each. Samantha Roy scored 11 points and teammates Abby Kelly, Sela Kay and Moira Train each scored 10 apiece. Bangor graduate Cordelia Stewart pulled down 7 rebounds for the Polar Bears and Kelly dished out 5 assists.
Emmy Churchill (Jr. Washburn, ME) led the Owls with 13 points and added 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Hunter Mercier (Fr. Fairfield, ME) scored 12 points and added 3 assists. Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) had 6 boards and 3 assists for UMPI.
