Presque Isle, ME - The UMPI and UMaine-Machias women's basketball teams took two overtime periods to decide the final outcome of Friday night's game at Wieden Hall in which the Owls pulled out an exciting 66 to 63 victory. The non-conference battle is the only time Me-Presque Isle (5-4) and the Clippers (6-6) will meet this season.
The Owls jumped out to an early 7 to 0 lead on two layups on hard cuts by Marissa Valdivia Reagle who was on the receiving end of passes from Kendra Silvers and Emmy Churchill. Reagle would add a free throw and Churchill would make 2 foul shots for the quick lead. A Silvers 15 foot jumper and a break away layup by Reagle would put the Owls in front 11 to 2 before Me-Machias would chip away at the UMPI lead. UMPI would take a narrow 30 to 28 lead into the halftime break.
The 3rd Quarter saw the Owls keep a minimal 2 to 5 point lead until the Clippers Raegene Womack scored with 4 seconds remaining in the period to put the visitors ahead 40 to 39. The lead changed hands several times in the 4th quarter when Kendra Silvers (So. North Berwick, ME) connected on a short jumper to knot the game at 53 to 53 with 46 seconds left and neither team would score as the game headed to the 1st overtime.
Me-Presque Isle would go down 4 points in the extra session with 1:38 on the clock before Sara Musselman (Fr. Turlock, CA) hit 1 of 2 free throws. Rhylee Wright (Jr. Frenchville, ME) would get fouled on a 3 point shot attempt with 40 seconds remaining. Wright hit 2 of her 3 foul shots and UMPI trailed 60 to 58. The Owls got the ball back with 11 seconds left and Musselman then drove the left side of the lane to tie the game and send it into double overtime.
Musselman hit a jumper at the 4:47 mark of the 2nd overtime and the game remained 62 to 60 until Musselman added a free throw to make it 63 to 60 with 2:28 left. Hunter Mercier (Fr. Fairfield, ME) scored on a drive down the middle of the paint to give the Owls a 5 point advantage. The Clippers Faith Tirrell hit a 3 pointer from the left wing to quickly cut the UMPI lead to 2 points. Musselman connected on 1 of 2 free throws with 30 seconds remaining for a 63 to 60 lead and Tate Dolley of UMM missed on a game tying shot with the Owls Mercier securing the rebound and the win for UMPI.
UMPI was led by Marissa Valdivia Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists. Wright added 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Musselman and Emmy Churchill (Jr. Washburn, ME) scored 11 points each and Musselman dished out 6 assists. Kendra Silvers added 8 points and 7 boards for the Owls. Raegene Womack led UMM with a game-high 27 points and pulled down 15 boards, and Dolley scored 16 along with matching Womak with 15 rebounds.
Next up: Me-Presque Isle will host Husson University for two North Atlantic Conference games on January 4th and 5th.
