Presque Isle, ME – The UMPI Owls Women's Basketball Team (3-2) entered Friday night looking forward to playing their first North Atlantic Conference game and came away with a hard fought 46 to 41 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington (0-5).
The Owls played outstanding man to man defense in the opening half limiting the Beavers to 14 first half points and leading at the intermission 25 to 14. Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) recorded an amazing 10 steals herself in the 1st half alone and finished the game with 12 steals. Reagle also added 8 points and 4 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes of play to help UMPI to the early lead.
Both teams really struggled shooting the ball from the floor throughout the contest. UMPI went 9 minutes without scoring from midway through the 3rd quarter into the 4th period and UMaine-Farmington would grab their 1st lead of the game with 6 minutes remaining when McKenna Brodeur hit on 1 of 2 free throws. The lead changed hands several times in the 4th quarter when Hunter Mercier (Fr. Fairfield, ME) hit a huge 3 pointer with 2:51 left in the 4th to put UMPI up 34 to 33. Two more foul shots by the Beavers Brodeur put UMF back up by a point. Sara Musselman (Fr. Turlock, CA) scored on a drive to put the home team back ahead 38 to 37. Paige Carter hit a mid-lane jumper to put UMF back in front 39 to 38. Emmy Churchill (Jr. Washburn, ME) then scored on a conventional 3 point play on a drive to the basket dropping a floater in while getting fouled to put the Owls up 41 to 39. Churchill got a big steal and scored as the Owls went up by 4 points and Musselman picked her opponent at midcourt and Reagle put back a miss as UMPI gained a 45 to 39 advantage. UMPI was able to come up with a couple of more key stops to secure the win.
Me-Presque Isle had three players score in double digits with Rhylee Wright (Jr. Frenchville, ME) netting 11 points, and Reagle and Churchill with 10 points each. Wright added 8 rebounds on the game and Reagle pulled down 7 boards. Mercier had 6 rebounds including 2 important boards late in the 4th quarter. Musselman scored 8 points, had 4 rebounds and 2 assists in limited time due to foul trouble.
UMF was led by McKenna Brodeur with 11 points and she added 5 rebounds. Paige Carter scored 6 points and had a game high 15 rebounds on the night.
Next up: UMPI will host the University of Maine at Farmington again tomorrow at 3:00PM.
