PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (2-10) would see a late lead slip away as the Pine Manor Gators (5-10) would use a late run to take the victory by a score of 62-57.
UMPI would rattle off seven unanswered points to end the first quarter and take a six-point lead in the early going. The Owls would jump out by as many as nine in the early portion of the second quarter, but the Gators would take advantage of a cold spell by the Owls' offense, and find themselves down by one point at halftime. UMPI would cling to a 32-31 lead at the break.
Neither team would get much of an advantage in the third quarter, but the Gators would build a six-point lead early in the fourth quarter. The Owls would respond with a 10-1 run that would give them back the lead. With four minutes remaining, UMPI would lead by a score of 55-52. Offensive woes would once again plague the Owls, as their next points would come as a buzzer beating jump shot that would come too late for UMPI, as the Gators would end the game on a 10-2 run to take the victory.
Shaneka Monroe (SR, Jersey City, NJ) would lead all scorers, as she poured in 19 points for the Gators. Shaquanda Middleton (SR, Savannah, GA) would end with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing ten rebounds.
For the Owls, Rhylee Wright (SO, Frenchville, ME) would score 18 points, collect ten rebounds, and block five shots. Jessy Dickison (SR, Houlton, ME) would add 11 points, three assists, and three steals.
UMPI returns to action on Thursday, when they will be at SUNY Canton for a 4 pm tip.
