Early Lead Slips Away, Owls Fall

MACHIAS, ME – The Owls (0-2) would see an early lead slip through their hands on Sunday afternoon, as they would fall to the Maine-Machias Clippers by a score of 45-32.

The Owls would start the game on a 12-2 run, but the Clippers would chip into that lead to close the first quarter and take the lead for a brief period of time.  A three-pointer from Teagan Laweryson (SR, Moscow, ME) would give UMPI a 19-17 lead at the end of the first.

Machias would take a one point lead early in the second quarter, and both teams would go cold, stalling the scoring at 22-21.  After a four minute scoring drought, the Clippers would go on a 10-4 run, giving them the 32-25 lead at halftime.

The Owls were not able to get their offense going in the second half, allowing Machias to slowly extend their lead.  UMPI would trail throughout the second half, eventually falling they final score of 45-32.

UMPI shot just 17.9% from the field, while the Clippers would shoot 25.5%.  Machias would out rebound the Owls 49-35, but would also turn the ball over 21 times.

Laweryson would pace the Owls with 11 points.  Marissa Reagle (FR, Seattle, WA) would score seven, while collecting nine rebounds.  Brianna Losee (SR, Pittsfield, ME) would end up with eight rebounds.

The Owls are back in action on Sunday.  Becker College will visit Wieden Gymnasium as UMPI will host for the first time this season.  That game is scheduled to tip at noon.
