Season Preview: Women's Basketball

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls will look to five returning players to help lead a group that includes six new faces to the team as they look to improve on a 9-15 record from a year ago.

A new face will also be taking the helm this season as Gavin Kane steps in to lead the Owls.  Kane has spent time as an assistant at the University of Maine and the University of Maine at Farmington.  He also has seen success at the high school ranks, having won 17 conference championships, 12 Western Maine Championships, seven State Championships, and has an overall record of 522-117.  Kane will be joined on the sidelines by Matt Clark, who is also in his first year with the Owls.

Brianna Losee (SR, Pittsfield, ME) is the only fourth year player on the roster.  The guard looks to rebound back to form, as she averaged 7.8 points per game two seasons ago.  Senior Jessy Dickison (Houlton, ME) returns for her third year with the team, and is a defensive leader on the floor.  Dickison averaged 25 minutes a season ago, and helps lead the Owls with her high energy style of play.  Teagan Laweryson (SR, Moscow, ME) transferred to UMPI two seasons ago and has proven to be a valuable asset.  Laweryson shot 30.6 percent from the three-point line last season and will look for more opportunities to help the Owls with her outside shooting ability.

The team also returns two sophomores.  Emilia Churchill (Washburn, ME) averaged 4.1 points per game while being tasked to run the offense as a point guard last season.  Rhylee Wright (SO, Frenchville, ME) came on strong in the second half of last season, and will look to pick up where she left off.  Wright ended the season averaging 9.9 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game.

The Owls will add two new faces to their backcourt group as Mariah Lefleur (SO, Hartford, ME) and Marissa Reagle (FR, Seattle, WA) get set to make their college basketball debuts.  Adding size and depth to the frontcourt will be Laura Aroz (SO, Tucson, AZ), Kendra Silvers (FR, North Berwick, ME), Chelsea Winiarski (JR, Danforth, ME), and Ines Ngoga (FR, Rwanda, Africa).

The Owls open their season on the road as they travel to Central Maine Community College on Friday, November 17.  That game is scheduled for a 5 pm tip off.  They then travel to Machias on Sunday for a 3 pm matchup with the Clippers.  UMPI opens at home on Sunday, November 26th, as they play host to Becker College.  That game is scheduled to start at noon.  The next time the Owls will be home is the CAN/AM Tournament on January 4th and 5th.  They host CMCC on January 13th, Pine Manor on January 15th, Machias on January 24th, Fisher on January 28th, Fort Kent on February 2nd, and St. Joseph (VT) on February 10th.  The close out the regular season in Fort Kent on February 15th.
