ALFRED, NY – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball team (8-16) ended their season with a loss to the Pine Manor Gators (10-13) in the opening round of the American Collegiate Athletic Association Conference Tournament. The Gators would have a scoring outburst in the second half to take an 82-57 win and advance to the finals on Sunday.
The Owls would come out of the gates strong, shooting a solid 37.5% from the floor in the first quarter. UMPI would jump out to an early 7-2 lead, only to see their opponents come storming back and tie the game at ten. The Owls would end the first quarter, clinging to a 14-12 lead.
The Gators would grab their first lead of the game just a minute into the second quarter, but UMPI would regain the lead halfway through the second quarter. A 9-2 run by Pine Manor would give the Gators the lead at the half, as the Owls would trail by four.
Pine Manor would never surrender the lead from that point on. UMPI would struggle offensively in the second half, while the Gators were efficient, allowing them to slowly open up a lead. Pine Manor would hold a 14-point lead at the end of the third quarter, and then go on to shoot 60% from the floor in the fourth. The Owls would hit just four of their 27 attempted field goals in the final period, and the Gators would end up with a 25-point victory.
UMPI would get double-doubles from Amanda Hotham (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) and Rhylee Wright (FR, Frenchville, ME). Hotham would score 15 points and collect 13 rebounds, while Wright would score 13 and grab 11 rebounds. The Gators would end the game with all five of their starters in double digits in scoring, led by Erica Jones (JR, Atlanta, GA) with 22 points.
