CAMBRIDGE, MA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball team (4-12) had a late comeback attempt thwarted by the Lesley University Lynx (6-10) on Saturday night. The Owls would fall on the road by a score of 61-53.
Lesley jumped out to an early ten point lead would never trail in the contest. Despite being down early, UMPI would regroup and cut the lead to five at the end of the first quarter. A 10-3 run would give the Lynx a 29-18 advantage heading into intermission.
The home team would maintain a double-digit lead for the duration of the third quarter. The Owls would find themselves down by 11 with just seven minutes to go UMPI mounted a comeback effort. Sparked by Sydney Churchill (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) and Rhylee Wright (FR, Frenchville, ME) the Owls would get themselves back in the contest with a 10-3 run of their own. Down by just four with four minutes to play, that would be the closest the UMPI team would get. Lesley would finish the game on a 12-4 run and take an eight-point victory at home.
Wright would score 14 points, all in the second half, and grab eight rebounds on the evening. Teagan Laweryson (JR, Moscow, ME) would connect on four three-point baskets and end the night with 14 points. Sydney Churchill would score ten, while being credited with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Lesley was led by Theresa Pereira (JR, Hopedale, MA) who would score 25 points and grab five rebounds, while dealing out five assists. Dakota Jones (FR, Torrance, CA) would net 15 points, while pulling down 21 rebounds.
The Owls are scheduled to return home for a Wednesday night matchup with Maine-Machias (7-8). UMPI Athletics will be hosting its annual Cancer Awareness/Coaches Versus Cancer night. Multiple activities and fundraisers are planned and proceeds will benefit cancer research. The Women's game is scheduled for 5 PM.
