MACHIAS, ME – The University of Maine Presque Isle Women's Basketball team (1-5) earned their first victory of the season. They traveled to the University of Maine at Machias (4-6) and came away with a 63-41 win on the road.
The home team would start off the night hot, knocking down 41.7% of their shots from the floor and taking a 15-13 lead in the first quarter. The Owls would change the momentum in the second quarter, shooting seven of 14, while clamping down defensively and only allowing the Clippers to score nine points. A 19-2 run to start that second period and the Owls gaining a major bounding advantage would send them to the locker room with a 32-24 lead.
Machias would close the gap a bit in the third, but the Owls would continue to eliminate second chances for them and it would pay off, putting UMPI ahead by 19 at the end of the third. Neither team would shoot the ball well in the final period, but the Owls would have a big enough lead to cruise to a 22-point victory.
Rhylee Wright (FR, Frenchville, ME) would have a big night, picking up her first collegiate double-double. She would total 19 points and 14 rebounds. Amanda Hotham (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would continue her strong start to the season, putting up 16 points and collecting eight rebounds. Sydney Churchill (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would add eleven points to the effort.
