PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners (4-1) pulled away from the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (0-5) in the second half to claim their second win over UMPI this season. MMA would keep up their full court pressure throughout the contest, and piled on the Owls, ending the game with a score of 96-46.
The two teams looked to be evenly matched in the early going as the Owls would take a one-point lead with 4:30 left in the first quarter. A seven-and-a-half-minute scoring drought by UMPI would put the Mariners on top by as much as ten, but the Owls would fight back in the second quarter. It looked as though the game would go to intermission with a single digit point differential, but a buzzer beating shot by Alayne Felix (SO, Mahopac, NY) would give MMA an 11-point lead, with the score 29-18.
The Mariners would get hot in the third quarter, and hit 11 of 20 from the field, and the Owls were not able to keep pace. Six fourth quarter turnovers would seal the fate for UMPI, as the Mariners would continue on their torrid shooting pace. MMA continued to flex their defensive muscle, as they would come in the afternoon averaging giving up just 49.5 points per game, and would take the 50-point victory.
Emilia Churchill (FR, Washburn, ME) would score ten for the Owls and grab three rebounds. Amanda Hotham (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would end with seven points and four rebounds, while freshman Rhylee Wright (Frenchville, ME) would score seven and collect four rebounds as well.
Felix would pace the Mariners with 18 points and five rebounds.
The Owls start a long road stretch, as they won't play again in Wieden Gymnasium until the middle of January. Their next matchup is at Maine-Machias on Monday, a 5 PM game.
