Owls Sink the Clippers

MACHIAS, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (3-15) were able to pull away from the University of Maine at Machias Clippers (2-10) and secure a 61-50 victory on the road.

The Owls would hit six threes on the night and hit 37.9% of their shots from the floor on the night to propel them to the win.  The Owls would first pull away early using a nine point run to put some distance between them and their hosts.  UMPI would maintain a lead of around ten points until a 13-2 run late in the third quarter would put the Owls up by twenty.  Although the Clippers would be able to close the gap, the comeback attempt proved to be a futile effort, as time ran out on Machias.

The Owls would hold the Clippers to just 30.8% shooting on the night while creating 13 turnovers.  The Owls would have seven steals on the night, and only send Machias to the free throw line six times, while they would convert on 11 of 13 from the charity stripe.

I am really proud of our ladies playing so well without our leading scorer and rebounder," said Head Coach Doug Carter of his team's efforts.  "Defensively the entire squad played well, it was a solid team win."

Sidney Churchill (JR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would lead the attack for the Owls, scoring 18 pionts on seven of twelve shooting from the floor.  Brianna Losee (SO, Pittsfield, ME) would also have a big night, putting up 16 points.

The Clippers' Shannon Garland (SR, Robbinston, ME) would lead all scorers, as she put up twenty points to go with her eight rebounds.  Sophomore Allicen Brooks (Stockton Springs, ME) would add 17 points in the losing effort.

The Owls are on the road Saturday as the will meet Southern Maine Community College in Portland, ME.  That game will start at 2 PM.  They will return home for the weekend finale as the Owls host U Maine Augusta on Sunday at noon.
