BUFFALO, NY – The Villa Maria Vikings (15-5) used a big second quarter to vault themselves to victory at home, as they bested the University of Maine at Presque Isle by a score (2-15) of 73-54.
The Owls came out strong, leading throughout most of the first quarter. Senior Katie Patenaude (Presque Isle, ME) would score seven points to help UMPI build a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Vikings would turn the tables quickly in the second quarter, going on a 21-3 run that spanned six and a half minute span. Finding themselves in a hole for the first time of the afternoon, the Owls would fight back closing the lead to nine points just before the half time break.
Villa Maria would step on the gas to start the second half and started the third quarter with a 10-2 run and never looked back. The game would never be closer than 18 points from that point, as the Vikings would cruise to the 73-54 victory. Villa Maria benefitted from 33 UMPI turnovers, 21 one of them from Viking steals.
Megan Campbell (JR, Buffalo, NY) would pace all scorers with 19 points. She would add nine steals, seven assists, and five rebounds to her well-rounded game. Shaquana Owens (FR, Buffalo, NY) also showed her versatility on the court, recording a double-double, 18 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, five steals, and five blocks. Naomi Walker (FR, Buffalo, NY) would end the game with 14 points and ten rebounds.
The Owls were paced by Amanda Allen (SR, Limestone, ME) who would connect on four of six from the three point line on her way to a 14 point effort. Sydney Churchill (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would grab nine rebounds and Megan Jellison (FR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would collect seven rebounds as the Owls would win the rebound battle 46-42.
The Owls are next in action on Thursday evening, as they travel down state to take on Maine-Machias. The game will start at 5:30.
