PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The Villa Maria Vikings (12-4) exploded for 27 points in the first quarter to take control of the contest and beat the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (0-10) 86-57.
The Vikings would compile six steals, force eight Owl turnovers, and shoot 52.2% from the field in the first quarter to jump out to a sixteen point lead. Magan Campbell (JR, Buffalo, NY) scored 15 of her 26 points in that quarter on seven of ten shooting. UMPI's offense would finally come to life in the second quarter. Cutting down on the turnovers and improving their attack to shoot 53.3% in would help them start to cut into the Viking lead.
The Owl momentum would continue into the second half, as with just over five minutes left they would cut the lead to just eleven points, threatening to make a comeback effort. UMPI would go cold at the most inopportune time, and over the next four minutes Villa Maria would go on a 14-0 run, squashing the momentum built by the home team. The Vikings would continue to roll through the fourth quarter, and cruise to a 21 point victory.
Jayvonna Kincannon (JR, Buffalo, NY) would lead all scorers with 28 points while pulling in ten rebounds. Campbell would add five steals and three assists to her 26 point effort, while Shaquanna Owens (FR, Buffalo, NY) would score twenty points and grab nine rebounds.
The Owls host the University of New Brunswick-St. John this weekend in the CAN-AM Tournament. The two teams will meet on Saturday at 6 PM, and then match up again on Sunday at 4 PM.
