AUGUSTA, ME – A big second quarter lifted the University of Maine at Augusta Moose (9-3) over the University of Maine at Presque Isle (0-5) by a score of 69-52.
After a tightly contested first quarter, the Owls found themselves down by four. Both teams had their troubles shooting from deep early on, but managed to convert at a respectable percentage, with the Moose taking the lead at 16-12 heading to the second quarter. The home team would get hot at that point and put some distance in between the visiting UMPI squad. A 10 of 18 shooting performance by the Moose helped them build a 39-24 lead going into the half.
The Owls would mirror their hosts throughout the second half, as both teams struggled to connect on their opportunities in the third quarter. UMPI would shoot just 25% from the floor in the third, while Augusta was good on only 15% of their shots. The difference was in the free throws as the Moose connected on six of ten from the charity stripe. Both teams would catch fire in the fourth, putting up twenty points apiece. The Owls were sparked by some outside shooting, as Sydney Churchill (JR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would drain two of three from outside the arc in that quarter, and teammate Amanda Hotham (JR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would hit two of five from three point land. Conversely the Moose would do their damage inside the arc, going eight of sixteen from the field, but hitting just one three point attempt.
Churchill would lead all scorers with 25 points. Hotham would add 14 points and seven rebounds to the effort. Kylee Alton (JR, Burnham, ME) would also grab seven rebounds.
Jamie Plummer (JR, Richmond, ME) would pace the Moose with 20 points and ten rebounds. Caitlin LaFontain (FR, Topsham, ME) would also record a double-double, scoring 15 points and collecting ten rebounds.
The University of Maine at Presque Isle travels to Norwich College on Friday to compete in the Ed Hockenbury Classic Tournament. They will face Trinity College (Conn.) at 8 PM.
