CASTINE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Basketball team opened the season at the Pepsi Mariner Classic Tournament on Saturday. Cold shooting and turnovers plagued UMPI as Maine Maritime Academy would dispose of the Owls 75-28.
Amanda Hotham (JR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would open the scoring for the Owls, and Kylee Alton (JR, Burnham, ME) would give them an early lead. The two teams would trade baskets, with the Mariners taking a three point lead. Sydney Churchill (JR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would knock down a jump shot to cut the lead to one with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter. From there the Owls would go cold, and would not score a basket for the next 9:40. Maine Maritime would go in the opposite direction and get hot, knocking down 52.6% of their shots in the second quarter. The Mariner lead would be stretched to seventeen points before UMPI would score again. Hotham's basket with 4:08 left in the second quarter would be the only one the Owls would score in that period, and MMA would extend their lead to 35-10 at half.
Though shooting would improve slightly for the visitors, the Mariners would continue to stretch their lead throughout the second half. MMA would take advantage of 30 Owl turnovers and 21 offensive rebounds to cruise to a 75-28 victory.
Hotham would lead the Owls with 11 points and six rebounds. Alayne Felix (FR, Mohapec, NY) led all scorers with 16 points for the Mariners. Amanda Holewiak (FR, Sommerset, MA) would grab 11 rebounds.
The Owls will face the loser of the Endicott College vs. U Mass Boston game Sunday afternoon.
