Presque Isle, Maine -- On Senior Day, the UMaine-Presque Isle women used a strong second half performance from senior Olivia McNally to defeat the #1 ranked USCAA team in the nation, Central Maine, 59-58 Saturday afternoon.
Down 35-27 at half, McNally put the Owl squad on her back and scored 14 of her game-high 20 in the second half. The biggest basket of McNally's afternoon was a deep three with 30 seconds left to play that brought the Mustang lead to 58-57.
The resulting Mustang possession saw Gabby Fox, who led all Central Maine scorers with 19, miss a jumper with 15 seconds left to play.
Freshman Kristin Thompson grabbed the rebound of the Fox miss and Owl point guard Darby Toth drove the length of the court and dropped a pretty pass to McNally. McNally launched a 15 footer from the baseline that rimmed out, but teammate Amanda Hotham snared the errant shot and softly placed the ball into the basket, to give Maine-Presque Isle the final basket, the lead and the victory 59-58.
The stingy UMaine-Presque Isle defense held the nation's most potent offense to 58 points, more than 30 below their average coming into the game. The Owls forced 19 Mustang turnovers and scored 22 points off those miscues.
Hotham had 17 points and 9 rebounds for the Owls and Toth added 9 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 key steals. Rebecca Campbell scored 8 points and collected 9 boards.
Samantha Bruce added 12 for the Mustangs and Laura Soohey had a double-double for Central Maine with 11 points and 14 rebounds
UMaine-Presque Isle is now 16-6 and will next play Fisher College at noon on Sunday. Central Maine drops to 20-2 on the season and hosts Maine-Augusta on February 11.
