Rutland, Vermont – The visiting Maine-Presque Isle women defeated the USCAA Division II #11 ranked College of St. Joseph Fighting Saints 81-48 Thursday evening.
The final score was certainly not much of an indication of how competitive the game was as the much taller Fighting Saints started the second half on a 10-3 run to cut the Owl lead to 41-34 with 14:16 left in the game.
The teams would battle back and forth with UMPI taking a 50-40 lead with 10:08 on the clock. From that point on, the pressure defense of the Owls began to take it's toll on the home standing Fighting Saints. The Owls would finish the game on a 31-8 run that was fueled by 14 second-half St. Joseph's turnovers.
Olivia McNally continued her strong play on the road trip ringing up a career high 31 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Freshman Kristin Thompson added 15 points and 5 rebounds. Owl point guard Darby Toth had 12 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds, while Rebecca Campbell out fought the much larger Fighting Saints players for 10 rebounds.
Maine-Presque Isle (11-3) will next play Saturday at 1pm against fellow GSAC member Pine Manor in Chestnut Hill, MA. The game Saturday will mark the first matchup of GSAC foes that have winning records on the season.
