(BANGOR, ME) -- The University of Maine-Presque Isle women's basketball team shook off a slow shooting start in their Saturday afternoon contest at Eastern Maine Community College to defeat the Eagles, 54-35.
The Owls improve to 6-14 on the season. EMCC falls to 5-13.
Presque Isle finally registered a win over the Golden Eagles after failing in two previous attempts this season.
Defense steadied the Owls while they suffered through peaks and valleys with their scoring. Presque Isle only allowed 20 first half points, but were only able to manage 24 of their own.
Finally shots began to fall as UMPI began the 2nd half with an 8-0 run. Increasing the tempo seemed to be the key as the Owls seemed to wear out the undermanned EMCC squad.
Doni Yendriga (Fr./Conneaut, OH) and Darby Toth (Fr./North Port, FL) paced the Owls with 10 points a piece. Toth added 8 rebounds and 4 assists while fellow back court mate Olivia McNally (Jr./Sherman, ME) pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds while adding 9 points.
The Owls will return home Sunday, February 3rd to take on Fisher College. Gametime is 12pm.
During Sunday afternoon's game, UMPI basketball will be taking part in "Think Pink" activities to help raise Breast Cancer Awareness. Players will wear pink pre-game shirts and shoelaces. Special activities during and in-between the women's and men's basketball games will also be held.
