Focus; Free Throws, Foil Owls

(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- The University of Maine-Presque Isle women's basketball team did not score a basket from the floor until an Emily Pelletier (Sr./Fort Kent, ME) jumper nearly 8 minutes into Saturday's game vs. SUNY-Canton.  That slow start cost the Owls as they trailed the entire game en route to a 63-55 loss to the Roos.

Canton moves to 10-7 on the season and avenges a 54-46 loss at the hands of the Owls back on January 6th in New York.  The Owls are now 5-12 on the season.

The score would get as bad as 24-7 in favor of the visitors in the first half before Presque Isle finally appeared to wake up.  Still down 13 with less than four minutes remaining, the Owls managed to run off the final 7 points of the half to go into the locker room trailing only by six, 28-22.

A quick 5-2 run to start the 2nd half brought the Owls even closer at 30-27.  That was when the Roos' Corrine Riegel (Bainbridge, NY) answered with six straight points of her own part of an 8-0 that gave the Roos some breathing room that they enjoyed for most of the 2nd half.

The Owls made one last push when center Doni Yendriga (Fr./Conneaut, ME) hit 3 straight shots to pull within 51-46.  That was as close as the team would get until Amanda Hotham (Fr./Fort Fairfield, ME) hit a very deep three with :22 remaining to make the score 59-55.  But Canton hit their free throws and locked down the win from there.

For the victors, Joelle Percy (Black River, NY) led all scorers with 16 points.  Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, NY) added 15 points to go with 13 rebounds.

Yendriga had her strongest game of the 2nd half of the season scoring 16 on 8-10 shooting from the floor.  Hotham came off the bench to score 13, and Pelletier hit three from long distance while finishing with 12.

The Owls will not get much time to linger on Saturday's loss as they return to the court tomorrow, January 27th, when they host Maine Maritime Academy.  Game time is 12:00pm.
