USCAA #1 Daemen Doubles Up Owls
(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- Reann Stilwell came off the bench to score 25 points on 10-15 shooting from the floor to lead USCAA #1 Daemen (NY) College over the University of Maine-Presque Isle women's basketball team, 98-49 in Presque Isle on Friday night.
Daemen improves to 17-6 on the year while the Owls fall to 4-10.
Transition was the key for the Wildcats as the Owls were unable to continue the quick pace set by Daemen.
"Even after made shots they were so quick and smooth in their transition from defense to offense, that we just couldn't keep up after a while," said Owls' coach Marc Heidorf. "That kind of continuity comes from just playing alot together as a unit. They deserve that ranking, that's seems pretty clear."
The Owls got some good looks at the basket early and hit 5-6 from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes. Reigning Association of NCAA Division III Independents "Player of the Week" Emily Pelletier scored 14 first half points on a scorching 5-7 from the floor including 4-4 from downtown.
But Presque Isle could not slow down the Wildcat express and 6'5 post player Monica Kosior. Kosior had her way inside, making 7 of her 9 first half shots, many of which came at point blank range and the Wildcats led 49-27 at the break.
Daemen, a provisional member of NCAA Division II this year and a full member next year when they drop the USCAA association, were never seriously challenged in the second half.
Four Wildcats finished in double figures led by Stilwell's 25. In addition to Kosior's 16, two other starters, Chelsea Andorka and Samantha Stanfield chipped in 10 apiece.
Owl Amanda Hotham (Fr./Fort Fairfield, ME), making her first collegiate start, scored 15 points on 5-10 shooting. Pelletier finished with the 14 she put up in the first half.
Daemen will remain in Aroostook County and continue on north Saturday to face UMaine-Fort Kent. The two teams played earlier this season in New York with the Wildcats pulling out a 99-50 victory.
Presque Isle, who had gotten off to a hot 4-1 start to 2013, will not have much time to dwell on Friday night's result as they turn around and host UMaine-Augusta at noon on Saturday. The two teams met in Bangor back on December 3rd with the Moose coming out with a 70-58 win.
* Hotham took a shot in the 2nd half attempting to take a charge under the basket. Officials ruled that she did not quite get out of the "charge circle". She remained down on the court for a few minutes, before getting up and returning to the bench. She would later return to the game.
* After reaching double figures only twice in the team's first 6 games of the season, Pelletier has been on a scoring tear since then hitting double figures in ALL 7 games since that point and averaging 14.8 ppg in that stretch.
* Freshman Darby Toth (Fr./North Port, FL) returned to action for the Owls after missing last weekend's action for medical reasons. The rookie point guard scored 4 points and pulled down 2 rebounds in 16 minutes of play.
* Ashley Laking (Fr./Topsfield, ME), who joined the Owls after the holiday break, scored her first career bucket on a leaner in the paint late in the 2nd half.
