(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- Larresha Blackman pulled down 18 rebounds and Emma Johnson scored 25 points as Eastern Maine Community College defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle's women's basketball team, 53-44 on Friday night.
The road win marks the 2nd time the Eagles have topped the Owls this season as the two teams faced off back on November 18th, with EMCC winning 44-36. Eastern Maine is now 3-8 on the season while Presque Isle falls to 0-8.
After an Emily Pelletier (Sr./Fort Kent, ME) three-point basket put the Owls on top 3-2 very early, the Eagles' Kara Hebert answered with a three of her own to take away the only lead UMPI would own.
Early in the 2nd half, EMCC expanded its lead to 12 points at 31-19 and did not allow the Owls to get any closer than seven over the next 10 minutes. At 10:57, Anita Allard hit a jumper to give the Eagles a 39-29 advantage.
That is when the Owls' defense tightened up as they did not allow another field goal to Eastern Maine until the 1:18 mark. The crackdown allowed Presque Isle to go on a 15-7 run and pull within two, 46-44. Carolyn Bess finally scored from the floor to break the drought and start the Eagles' decision 7-0 run to finish the game.
Rebounding, an Achilles heel of the Owls all season long, reared its ugly head again as UMPI allowed 15 offensive rebounds and were outworked on the boards to the tune of a 47-32 disadvantage.
Olivia McNally (Jr./Sherman, ME) led Presque Isle scorers with 18.
Presque Isle will return not return to the court until next year when they travel to Fisher (MA) College on January 4th for a 5pm tilt vs. the Falcons.
