(Presque Isle, ME) -- For the 2nd time this weekend, the University of Maine-Presque Isle women's basketball team jumped out to a quick lead against their opponent. And for the 2nd straight game, they were not able to hang onto it. On Sunday it was Senior Day at Wieden Hall and the Owls jumped out to a 9-2 lead over a shell-shocked Virginia University-Lynchburg team. It only took the next two minutes however for the Dragons to go on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 11-9. It was a lead they would not relinquish on their way to a 58-49 victory.
VUL's (7-6) Courtney Brox came off the bench to lead all scorers with 20 points, not missing a 3-point attempt (4-4) or free throw (6-6) in the contest.
For UMPI (8-14) it was a rough end to a rough week that began last Tuesday with a 74-73 triple-overtime loss to UMaine-Fort Kent. On Friday, the Owls tried to avenge that loss when they traveled to Fort Kent for a rematch with the Bengals. That game started with Presque Isle jumping out to an 8-1 lead in the first two minutes. But as was the case on Sunday, the Owls were unable to build upon that hot start and UMFK went on to a 59-51 win.
After only getting to the free throw line a miniscule 3 times vs. Fort Kent on Friday, UMPI was 21-25 on foul shots against the Dragons. But VUL was able to counter by taking 17 more shots from the floor than UMPI and hitting 6 three-pointers compared to zero by the Owls.
Prior to the game the Owls honored seniors Emily Moore (Sr./Lisbon, ME) and Chelsea Boudreau (Sr./Wallace, Nova Scotia). Moore, a 4-year player for UMPI, scored 9 points and dealt 4 assists despite turning her ankle early in the contest. Boudreau, who returned to UMPI women's basketball mid-season after a few year's absence, made her first start of the year registering a rebound and a steal in 12 minutes.
UMPI will finish up the home part of their 2011-2012 schedule on Wednesday when they play host to Bates College. The Bobcats defeated the Owls back on January 31st, 88-51. Game time for Wednesday is 5:30pm.
