PRESQUE ISLE, ME (1-5-12) What was a close game through the first 30 minutes of action quickly got away late from teh University of Maine-Presque Isle women's basketball team. Taking on Houghton (NY) COllege in the team's first game after the holiday break, the Owls found themselves still in the game, down seven 55-48 with just over eight minutes remaining. The Highlanders took over from there however, finishing the game on a 24-5 run. The result was a 79-53 defeat at the hands of the visitors from the Empire State.
Slow starts after both the opening tip and the start of the second half forced the under-manned UMPI (3-7) squad to expend a great deal of energy in the middle of each half just to get back into the game. Nine minutes into the game the Owls trailed 17-8 but battled back to knot things up at the half, 34-34. The second half began the same for UMPI as they fell behind by eight, 42-34, less than 3 minutes in. But a pair of Renee Moore (So. / Lisbon, ME) free throws capped a 7-0 Owls run to pull them to within one.
The Owls put a trio of scorers in double figures led by Rashell Saucier's (So./Washburn, ME) 15-point performance. Emily Pelletier (Jr. / Fort Kent, ME) and Olivia McNally (So. / Sherman, ME) chipped in 13 and 11, respectively.
In the end however, it was UMPI's 29 turnovers that did the team in. The Highlanders (8-4) took advantage led by Kristen Moose who scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the 2nd half. Houghton's Jennifer Hudson was right behind with 21.
The UMPI women will now head out on a 7-day, 3 game tour of the northeast United States. First up will be a battle at SUNY-Canton on Monday, January 9th. Gametime is set for 12:00pm.
