Moore Leads Owls to Victory
PRESQUE ISLE, ME (12-6-11) – The University of Maine-Women's Basketball team played their first game of the season back on November 15th. On December 6th, the team finally played its first HOME game. Point guard Emily Moore (Sr./Lisbon, ME) made sure the game was worth the wait as she led her Owls to a 66-60 victory over the University of Maine-Machias.
Moore played a complete game leading UMPI in scoring with 18 points while pulling down 8 rebounds and dishing out 8 assists to only 1 turnover. For the Owls (2-5) it was the team's second straight win, as they beat Pine Manor College on Sunday, 57-48. Over the modest two-game winning streak, Moore has put together a 16:1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
"'Em' was dialed in today," said UMPI first year head coach Marc Heidorf, "right down to hitting some clutch free throws in the closing minutes."
Hot shooting was the story in the first half as the Clippers (5-4) shot 50% from the floor en route to a 37-33 halftime advantage. Machias junior Sabree Rodriguez had 11 points at the halfway point. She finished the contest with a game high 23.
In the 2nd half the teams traded the lead back and forth until the 9:36 point when the Clippers pulled out to a 51-46 advantage. However a short jumper from Owls forwardBrigitte Pratt (Fr./Southwest Harbor, ME) started a 9-0 UMPI run that gave them a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Presque Isle finished with four players scoring in double figures. In addition to Moore's 18,Rashell Saucier (So./Washburn, ME) notched her 5th "double-double" of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Guards Emily Pelletier (Jr./Fort Kent, ME) and Olivia McNally (So./Sherman, ME) scored 10 apiece.
UMPI returns to the road once again for their next game as they will travel to the Bangor Arena to face UMaine-Augusta on Thursday, December 8th to face the Moose. Tip time is slated for 5:30pm.
