CASTINE, Maine – Alexis Bennett scored 17 points to lead Maine Maritime Academy to a 63-43 victory over Maine-Presque Isle on Tuesday evening. The Mariners (1-0) opened up a permanent, double-digit lead in the game's first 10 minutes.
Bennett accounted for six of the Mariners first nine points. Her layup at 14:03 of the first half sparked an 11-1 run that put the Owls (0-1) in a 14-point hole with 9:52 left in the opening stanza. The Mariners stretched the lead as large as 17 points late in the first half. UMPI outscored the Mariners 10-5 to finish the half to cut their halftime deficit to 30-18.
However an 8-0 MMA run to start the 2nd half proved to be too big of a hole for the Owls to dig out of.
"They hit the boards a bit harder than us tonight," said coach Marc Heidorf, who made his coaching debut with the Owls. "That made it tough to go on the run we needed to get back into the game."
UMPI had two players post double-doubles. Rashell Saucier (So./Washburn, ME) dropped 13 and hauled in 11 rebounds, while Renee Moore (So./Lisbon, ME) put up 11 points and recorded as many rebounds. Emily Pelletier (Jr./Fort Kent, ME) also scored 11 for the Owls.
The Owls will face Maine-Farmington at the UMF Tipoff Classic on Friday evening. Tip time will be at 7:30.
