WATERVILLE, ME - UMaine Presque Isle skiing returns from NENSA Eastern Cup #2 in Waterville, Maine. Two days of racing featured a skate sprint and a classic mass start 10/15km.
Leading the UMPI Owls in the sprint was freshman John Paluszek (Farmington, NH.) John skied to a career best 3rd in the sprint qualifying round. An unfortunate fall in the quarterfinal round kept John from advancing to the finals. Other notable performances were Connor Hrynuk in 56th and Jason Bartley in 63rd.
Sundays mass start classic race proved to be quite the event. With well over 100 competitors taken part, many crashes and broken equipment could be found along the challenging 5km course at Quarry Rd. Jason Bartley led the men in 39th, John Paluszek 46th and Connor Hrynuk in 50. Jacob Welch and Riley McDuffie also tackled the very challenging course.
On the womens side senior Lydia Streinz skied much of the first lap in the top 30 before fading to 49th. We can expect stronger results from Lydia as sure learns how to balance her recently diagnosed exercise induced asthma.
