EISA Championship Results: Women's 5K & Men's 10K

Event:   EISA Championships / Bates College Carnival

Location:   Black Mountain of Maine (Rumford, ME)

Conditions:   Sunny.  Temps just above freezing.  Nicely groomed course.

Race:  Men's 10K Classic
Overall Results
UMPI Team Finish:  8th (50.0)

Coach Paul Stone's Thoughts:

"The men were back to full strength today.  It (the 8th place finish) would have been an accomplishment last year but this year it has become a habit and they were a bit dissappointed.  Eirik Fosnæs (So/Bærum, Norway) lead the way in tenth, his best finish of the season so far.  He has pretty much cemented his position on the NCAA qualifying list and barring disaster will be racing in two weeks at the NCAA championships.  Joey Bard (Jr./Woodland, ME) and Justin Fereshetian (Sr./Turner, ME) also scored points for the team with Joey in 36th and Justin in 52nd.  Joey started off well but faded a little as I probably did not get the wax thick enough for the skis he was on.  He still has a small chance at making the NCAA if he has an exceptional race tomorrow."

Race:  WOMEN'S 5K Classic
Overall Results

Coach Stone:  "After skiing with a small team last weekend the women were back at full strength today.  Kati Christoffel (Sr./Clifton Park, NY) led the way in 56th place for one of her better races this season.  Desiree Smith (Sr./Thomaston, ME) and Hilary Saucy (Fr./Harleysville, PA) scored points for the team.  It marks the second time this year that Desi has scored points for the team.  Quite an accomplishment for someone who picked up the sport only a short time ago.  Despite some good efforts they still fell a little short of beating their nemesis St. Michael's College."
