Presque Isle, ME – The UMPI Women's Softball Team completed a sweep of Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Sunday afternoon winning two more games and taking all 4 games of the weekend series improving their record to (13 - 7 ), 11 and 4 in the North Atlantic Conference. The weekend victories put the Owls on a current 12 game winning streak with recent sweeps of UMF, Northern Vermont-Johnson and now Northern Vermont-Lyndon.
14 -3, UMPI
The Owls scored early and often in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader on their way to a 14 to 3 win over the Hornets. UMPI scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning as Jordan Hansen (Phillips, NE) led off with a base hit and promptly stole second base. Delanie Strout (Greene, ME) walked as Hansen stole 3rd. Hansen scored the game's 1st run on a Lyndon infield error. After a fly out, Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA) walked and then Roni Shaw (Payette, ID) delivered a single scoring Strout. Anaiz Diaz (Tampa, FL) connected for a RBI double plating Terry and a 3 to 0 Owls lead.
Lyndon immediately came back in the top of the 2nd inning with 3 of their own runs tying the game with the big blow being a 3 RBI triple by M Fowler.
UMPI bounced right back in the bottom of the frame scoring 9 times. Hansen worked a walk to lead off the inning and stole 2nd base. Strout followed with a RBI single to center before Delaney Anfinson (Green Cove Springs, FL) stroked a double driving in two more Owls runners. After an infield error, Shaw reached 1st base when she was hit by a pitch, and Anfinson then scored on a wild pitch. Diaz brought in a run with a single to right field scoring Terry and then Halle Garner (Murray, UT) walked. Alyssa Merone (Dover, NH) scored Shaw with an infield single and one out later Hansen ripped a ground ball that handcuffed the Hornets 3rd baseman and 2 more UMPI runs crossed the plate. Strout added a RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield and Anfinson came to the plate for a 2nd time connecting for a RBI double and a big Owls lead. Marisaa Valdivia Reagle (Seattle, WA) added a 2 run single in the bottom of the 3rd inning to close out the scoring.
Reagle gained the win on the mound for UMPI pitching 5 innings, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits while walking 5 and striking out 4. Jayden Allinson got the loss for Lyndon allowing 13 hits while striking out 2.
UMPI continued the hit parade in Sunday's 2nd game with 18 base knocks while on their way to a 16 to 0 win and the weekend sweep over Northern Vermont-Lyndon. Owls pitcher Olivia Riitano (Abbot, ME) got the win on the mound throwing all 5 innings, allowing no runs, only 3 hits, walking none and striking out 4.
The Owls struck for 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning highlighted by a RBI single from Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA). Then added 4 runs in the 2nd inning as Jordan Hansen (Phillips, NE) notched a RBI double, Delanie Strout (Greene, ME) followed with a RBI single and Terry added a 2 RBI single to put UMPI ahead 6 to 0. Hansen added a run scoring single in the bottom of the 3rd inning and Strout brought in another run on a double as the Owls pulled away for good.
Hansen, Terry and Strout each recorded 3 hits for the Owls while Shaw and Karis Dankert (Dover Foxcroft, ME) had 2 hits apiece. Hansen had 4 RBI and Terry 3. Danilee Robinson, Ashley Hart and Marin Fowler accounted for the 3 base hits for the Hornets (2-13), 2 and 9 in the NAC.
UMPI will play next with doubleheaders on May 1st and May 2nd at home against Thomas College.
