Presque Isle, ME – The UMPI Softball team hosted their first home games in five years, starting with today's doubleheader vs North Atlantic Conference opponent Northern Vermont University – Lyndon. The Owls would extend their win streak to ten games with a two wins vs the Hornets, 11-3 and 16-3.
Olivia Riitano (Abbot, ME) earned the start for UMPI, pitching two innings while Brookelynn Garcia (Torrance, CA) pitched the remaining four innings, of the six-inning game, earning the win. Garcia finished the game with seven strikeouts and no earned runs. Victoria Valentine pitched the full game for Lyndon as the Owls were able to finish the game with ten hits and 11 earned runs.
Right off the gate, with the very first pitch of the day, Jordan Hansen (Phillips, NE) hit a slap to right center. Hansen was able to show off her speed with an in the park homer, giving her, her fourth homerun on the year. The Hornets immediately answered with a big second inning scoring three runs off four hits and two errors, including a two-RBI double.
UMPI then answered right back, taking the lead again in the bottom of the third inning. Scoring off a single by Roni Shaw (Payette, ID) and a two-RBI single by Zoe Aylward-Frank (Kennebuck, ME). The Owls continued their offensive rally in the next inning, scoring three more runs in the fourth. With Hansen on first, Delanie Strout (Greene, ME) hit an RBI triple. Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA) then followed with an RBI double to bring Strout home. Anaiz Diaz (Tampa, FL) then finished the inning with a single to bring Terry home and give the Owls a 7-3 lead.
Another inning full of runs followed, in the fifth, Marissa Valdivia Reagle (Seattle, WA) singled to bring Halle Garner (Murray, UT) home. Later in the inning, yet again Hansen hits a home run. This one getting over the right field fence, Hansen hit her second of the game and her fifth on the year, currently leading the NAC. The RBI homer then gave the Owls a 9-3 run at the end of the fifth inning. With the Owls up six runs, Reagle then hit a walk-off two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, ending the game due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Jordan Hansen (Phillips, NE) earned the start on the mound for UMPI pitching the first three innings and only allowing two hits and two earned runs. Marissa Valdivia Reagle (Seattle, WA) then finished the five-inning game with three strikeouts and allowing two hits and one earned run. Gracie Ducker pitched for Lyndon, allowing 18 hits and 14 earned runs.
Another early start for UMPI, coming off a two-RBI double from Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA), scoring Delanie Strout (Greene, ME) and Dalaney Anfinson (Green Cove Springs, FL). Karis Dankert (Dover Foxcroft, ME) then followed, getting on with an error, which turned into two more runs for UMPI and a 4-0 start to the game. Terry then started it off again for UMPI with an RBI single in the third inning. Halle Garner (Murray, UT) then singled, bringing Terry home. Reagle then hit a two-RBI single, but was able to score off an error on the Hornets, giving the Owls a 13-0 lead.
Lyndon was then able to get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with two runs off a passed ball and a fielder's choice. Another big inning for UMPI in the bottom of the fourth adding three more runs. An RBI single from Strout scored Aylward-Frank. Later Terry hit two more home off a single, making that six RBI's on the game. The Hornets were able to put another run on the board in the top of the fifth off a triple before the Owls were able to end it in five.
The Owls will play another doubleheader vs NVU – Lyndon tomorrow in an early game, 10:00am start.
