UMPI Advances in NAC Playoffs with 1 to 0 Win Over UMF

Waterville, ME - Brookelynn Garcia (So. Torrance, CA) hurled a 7 inning shutout and the UMPI Owls played solid defense behind their pitcher as UMPI kept their season alive with a 1 to 0 win over UMaine-Farmington in the North Atlantic Conference double-elimination Tournament being played at Colby College. The win marked a coaching milestone for Me-Presque Isle Head Coach Sara Shaw who earned her 100th career coaching victory.

The Owls who fell to Husson University in the 1st round yesterday needed the win today to advance and keep their NAC Championship hopes alive. Garcia met the challenge on the mound allowing only 5 hits while walking none and striking out 9 UMF hitters on the afternoon. After a single to centerfield to open the top of the 7th inning, Garcia fanned the next two batters and then induced the final out of the game on a popup to 1st baseman Mel Terry and the Owls move on to the 5:30 game today with the winner earning a spot in the Championship game(s) tomorrow.

Garcia set the stage early for UMPI striking out four UMF hitters in the first two innings of the ballgame. The Owls scord the only run of the game in the bottom of th 2nd inning when Marissa Valdivia Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) singled to center. Reagle advanced to 2nd base on a perfctly placed sacrifice bunt by Yvonne Hartridge (Jr. Bronx, NY) and then scord as Anaiz Diaz (So. Tampa, FL) hit a groundball up the middle that just sneaked through into centerfield for a RBI single and what proved to be the game winner.

The Me-Presque Isle defense came up big in the 4th and 5th innings. UMPI shorstop Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ) made a diving catch on a line drive in the 4th robbing the Beavers Leah Stevens of a basehit. In the 5th, after a stikeout, UMF got back to back hits and had runners on 2nd and 3rd base with one out. A hard hit groundball at Sarah Duncklee resulted in getting the hitter out at 1st base as the runner at 3rd broke for the plate. 1st basemen Mel Terry (So. Moreno Valley, CA) fird the ball home to catcher Delanie Strout (Jr. Greene, ME) who applied the tag in time for a double play and the Owls got out of the jam.

Each Team had 5 hits on the day with Reagle the only player with 2 hits. Garcia (11-8) got the pitching win for UMPI while the Beaver's Brianna McGrath (10-8) was the tough luck loser. McGrat pitched 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, allowing only 1 run, while walking 1 and striking out 7 UMPI hitters.
