Owls Lose Tough Game in NAC Playoff Opener

Watrville, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Softball Team put 4 runs up on the scoreboard in the top of the 6th inning of their 1st Round NAC Playoff game vs. Husson University to take a 6 to 4 lead after Melanee Terry and Marissa Valdivia Reagle slammed back to back homeruns, and had high hopes of a victory over the Eagles. The excitement of the top half of the inning was quickly erased when Husson came back in the bottom of the 6th to score 5 runs of their own to go ahead 9 to 6 and advance tomorrow in the winners bracket of the double elimination tournament being played at Colby Collge in Waterville.

Husson scored the games first run in the bottom of the 1st inning when Bri Brochu was able to race home on a RBI sacrifice fly ball to right field by Olivia Smith. In the Eagles half of the 2nd inning, they added two unearned runs when Arika Brochu and Kylie Cunningham scored on infield errors by th Owls and took a 3 to 0 lead.

In the top of the 3rd, UMPI got some action going on the base paths as Jordan Hansen and Emily Page reached. Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ) stepped to the plate and ripped a hard groundball in the hole between shortstop and third. Eageles shortstop Chloe Gorey made a diving effort as the ball hit off the end of her glove and both Hansen and Page scored.

In the bottom of the 4th Whitney Bess walked and Arika Brochu brought Bess home when she hit a shot to the gap in left centerfield and Husson went up 4 to 2.

Husson University threatened to open up the game in the bottom of the 5th inning when the Owls centerfielder Marissa Valdivia Reagle made a spectacular diving catch and was able to get up quickly and double an Eagles runner off 2nd base.

In the top of the 6th inning the Owls came out aggressively at the plate. Jordi Legassie (Sr. Presque Isle, ME) placed a base hit just out of the reach of the diving Eagles centerfielder Olivia Smith. Duncklee was then hit by a pitch on the elbow and UMPI had the start of a rally brewing. Mel Terry walked to the batters box and drilled a deep blast over the left field fence on a 2-2 pitch to give th Owls a 5 to 4 lead as the UMPI bench errupted. Marissa Valdivia Reagle (So. Seattle WA) followed Terry by stepping up to the plate a hitting a solo shot over the centerfield fence and ME-Presque Isle would lead 6 to 4.

In the bottom of the 6th frame Husson would have 3 consecutive hitters lay down bunts with Arika Brochu and Bri Brochu beating out the first two for infield singles. Chloe Gorey then followed with a bunt of her own and the throw to 1st base got away down the rightfield line and 2 runs scored for the Eagles and the game was tied 6 to 6. Olivia Smith followed with a 2-RBI homerun over the centerfield wall and Husson would add an unearned run for a 9 to 6 advantage before the Owls could get out of the inning.

The Owls were hoping for another rally in the 7th inning and Jordi Legassie would get a two-out base hit but Me-Presque Isle was not able to push across anymore runs against Husson starting pitcher Jen Jones.

Jones went the distance on the mound getting the win, throwing 7 innings, allowing 6 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 9. Marissa Valdivia Reagle started the game for UMPI and Brookelynn Garcia (So. Torrance, CA) took the loss in relief going 3.1 innings, giving up 5 runs on 9 hits while walking 1.

Legassie and Reagle were repeat hitts for UMPI and Mel Terry (So. Moreno Valley, CA) had 3 RBI and Sarah Duncklee addd 2 RBI. The Owls had 6 hits on the game while the Eagles had 13.
