Orono, ME - The UMPI Softball Team made a very long day a prosperous one as they swept a doubleheader from Northern Vermont University-Johnson after taking two games earlier in the day from NVU-Lyndon on their way to 4 wins Saturday afternoon and evening.
In the opening game vs. the Badgers, UMPI jumped out to an early 6 to 0 lead after two innings of play. In the 1st inning Marissa Valdivia Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) ripped a RBI single plating Jordi Legassie with the game's first run as Mel Terry moved to 3rd base on the hit. Terry would then score on a passed ball. Delanie Strout (Jr. Geene, ME) would follow with a RBI double scoring Reagle, and Strout would score herself on a wild pitch and give the Owls a 4 to 0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Emily Page (So. Lincoln, ME) would homer for Me-Presque Isle and later in the inning Jordan Hansen would cross the plate on a RBI infield groundout by Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ).
UMPI put the game out of reach in the 3rd inning when they tacked on 5 more runs. The first 3 runs of the inning for the Owls were unearned and then Sarah Duncklee drove in Jordi Legassie (Sr. Presque Isle, ME) with a base hit. Melanee Terry (So. Moreno Valley, CA) then doubled to chase home Duncklee and UMPI took an 11 to 0 lead. The final score would stand at 11 to 0 in the five inning ballgame.
Brookelynn Garcia (So. Torrance, CA) would sail through 4 innings on the mound for the Owls allowing 0 runs, 0 hits and striking out 4 Badger hitters. Reagle would pitch the 5th inning allowing 0 runs on 1 hit, and striking out 1. Nicole Mooney took the pitching loss for NVU-Johnson giving up 11 runs (5 earned runs) on 8 hits, walking 7 and striking out 1.
For Me-Presque Isle, Terry and Reagle were repeat hitters with 2 hits each. Terry had 2 doubles and Duncklee had 2 RBI.
Rightfielder Kaitlin Boucher had the lone hit for the Badgers.
Game #2: In the nightcap the Owls scored 9 runs in the first 3 innings and cruised to a 9 to 1 five inning win over the Badgers. UMPI received a solid pitching perormance from starter Marissa Valdivia Reagle for 3 innings, and 1 inning each in relief from Melanee Terry and Brookelyn Garcia.
In the bottom of the 1st inning Jordan Hansen ledoff with a homerun to put the Owls up 1 to 0. Jordi Legassie would score the 2nd run when she crossed the plate as Sarah Duncklee reached on an infield error. Mel Terry follwed with a RBI double scoring Duncklee and a quick 3 to 0 UMPI advantage.
In the 2nd inning the Owls added 4 runs on a 2 RBI single by Duncklee, a RBI double from Mel Terry and Roni Shaw collected a RBI on a groundout to shortstop scoring teammate Terry. UMPI would add 2 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
NVU-Johnson would push a run across the plate in the top of the 4th inning when Kaitlin Boucher reached first on an infield error, Savannah Dufresne advanced to third on the play and Kaitlin Reville scored the unearned run.
Valdivia-Reagle pitched 3 innings for UMaine-Presque Isle allowing 0 runs, 2 hits and struck out 2. Nicole Mooney suffered the loss on the mound for the Badgers going 4 innings, aloowing 9 runs (5 earned runs) on 6 hits while walking 10.
Next up: The Owls play tomorrow (Sunday) in a doubleheader at Husson University. Game times are 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
