UMPI Softball Sweeps SUNY Canton

Queensbury, NY - The UMPI Owls Softball Team (10-10) scored 2 runs in the 1st inning and tacked on single runs in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th innings while pounding out 11 hits on their way to a 6 to 0 win over SUNY Canton (12-16) in Game #1 of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. 

In the top of the 1st inning Mel Terry (So. Moreno Valley, CA) would bring in Jordan Hansen (Fr. Phillips, NE) with a RBI single up the middle and a quick 1 to 0 UMPI lead. The Owls would add another run when Sarah Duncklee crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Me-Presque Isle would move ahead 3 to 0 in the 3rd inning when Marissa Valdivia Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) would jack a solo homerun to left centerfield. In the 4th the Owls would get another run when Reagle walked with the bases loaded and Emily Page (So. Lincoln, M) would come in to score and UMPI would lead 4 to 0. In the 5th inning Emily Page would rip a RBI single to centerfield scoring Delanie Strout (Jr. Greene, ME) and Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ) would add another insurance run for UMPI in the top of the 7th with a RBI single to rightfield scoring Strout.

Brookelynn Garcia (7-6) (So. Torrance, CA) went the distance on the mound for the Owls going 7 innings, allowing no runs on 6 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 7. The Owls played errorless ball behind Garcia. Kayla Chavarri (8-7) suffered the pitching loss for the Roos.

Duncklee had 3 basehits for UMPI including a double while Hansen, Terry and Reagle each had 2 hits. Shortstop Jaedyn Ossont went 3 for 3 at the plate for SUNY Canton.

 

Game #2: In the second game of the doubleheader played at the Adirondack Sports Complex, UMPI trailed SUNY Canton 1 to 0 going into the 3rd inning as Anaiz Diaz scored an unearned run when Jordan Hansen reached on an infield error. Two batters later Sarah Duncklee would single to centerfield scoring Hansen to give the Owls the lead. Mel Terry would follow with a single up the middle scoring Jordi Legassie and Me-Presque Isle would go up 3 to 1.

Valerie Clark would knock in a run for the Roos in the bottom of the 4th inning with an infield single. In the 5th SUNY Canton would tie it up 3 to 3 whem Jordan Knapp singled to center scoring Kayla Chavarri.

Mel Terry would rip a 2-RBI double in the top of the 7th inning to score Sarah Duncklee and Jordan Hansen, and Roni Shaw (So. Payette, ID) followed with a 2-run homerun to centerfield as the Owls would pull out an exciting 7 to 3 ballgame.

Savannah Borland (Fr. Brownsville, TX) started on the rubber for UMPI pitching 3 innings. Garcia came on in relief for 2 innings and Marissa Valdivia Reagle pitched 2 scoreless innings to get the win for the Owls. Alaina Beane went 5 innings for SUNY Canton and Chavarri took the loss in relief.
