Waterville, ME - The Univrsity of Maine-Presque Isle Softball Team (8-7) traveled to Colby College (3-13) Sunday for an afternoon doubleheader with the Mules.
With one out in the top of the 1st inning of the opener, Jordan Hansen (Fr. Phillips, NE) reached on an infield error and then stole 2nd base and advanced to 3rd on a catcher overthrow. Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) followed with a walk. Hansen was then thrown out at the plate with Reagle moving all the way to 3rd base. Sarah Dunklee followed with a 2-out single to rightfield scoring Reagle and giving the Owls an early 1 to 0 lead.
UMPI would carry a 3 to 0 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning when the Mules would explode for 6 runs to take the lead. Marissa Valdiva-Reagle would make a diving catch in centerfield for the 3rd out and to finally put a halt to the Colby rally. Mules freshman Laua Powell of Scarborough, ME had a RBI double in the inning.
The Owls couldn't get the offense going in the 6th and 7th innings and dropped Game #1 by a 6 to 3.
Brookelynn Garcia went 4.1 innings toeing the rubber for Me-Presque Isle with Savannah Borland (Fr. Brownsville, TX) and Reagle both coming on in relief. Wiley Horton got the pitching win for Colby College going the distance giving up 3 runs (2 earned runs) on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3.
Waterville, ME - Colby College (4-13) jumped out to a 3 to 0 lead in second inning of Game #2 Sunday afternoon and were able to hang on for a 3 to 2 win over the UMPI Owls (8-8).
The Mules were able to get 3 key hits in the 2nd inning when Hailey Rohall connected on a RBI single down the left field line scoring Lolo Niemiec for the games first run. Paige Hartnett singled to right bringing home Rohall and Carly Swartz ripped a triple to centerfield plating Hartnett and a 3 to 0 lead.
The Owls scored their first run when Emily Page (So. Lincoln, ME) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaed scoring Mel Terry (So. Moreno Valley, CA) in the top of the 4th inning. In the 5th Mel Terry had a RBI single scoring Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ) to cut the Mules lead to 3 to 2.
Colby held the Owls in the last two frames to secure a hard-fought 3 to 2 victory.
Brookelynn Garcia (So. Torrance, CA) went 6 innings on the mound for the Owls giving up 3 runs on 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Wiley Holton got the win for Colby pitching 5 innings and allowing 2 runs on 7 UMPI hits, walking 1 and striking out 3. Holly Lallis pitched the final 2 scoreless innings for the Mules.
Next up: UMPI will travel to UMF on Saturday April 13th for a doubleheader at 2:00 and 4:00 PM
