Buzzard's Bay, MA - The University of Maine-Presque Isle Softball Team put up 25 runs in two games to Sweep Mass Maritime in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Owls (8-4) stopped in Massachusetts for two games vs. the Buccaneers' (0-4) on their way back to Maine from South Carolina.
In the opener the Owls scored 2 unearned runs in the top of the 1st inning when Jordi Legassie (Sr. Presque Isle, ME) and Jordan Hansen (Fr. Phillips, NE) both crossed the plate on infield errors by the Bucs. Mass Maritime would quickly tie the game up in the bottom of the 1st frame on RBI singles by Madison Ovadek and Jenna Nalette.
UMPI would go up 4 to 2 in the 2nd inning when Hansen would rip a double to left scoring LeGassie and Delanie Strout (Jr. Greene, ME).
Pitcher Brookelyn Garcia (So. Torrance, CA) and the Owls defense would then keep the Buccaners' at bay and the UMPI Offense would tack on 6 runs in the top of the 4th inning to take a commanding 10 to 2 lead. A 2-RBI double by Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ) would score Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) and Hansen in the 4th and Yvonne Hartridge (Jr. Bronx, NY) would deliver a RBI single to cenerfield scoring Duncklee.
Garcia got the win on the mound going 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 6. Freshman pitcher Malarie Pittsley took the loss for the Buccaneers'.
Leadoff hitter Jordi Legassie paced Me-Presque Isle going 4 for 4 at the plate while Jordan Hansen added 2 hits and 2 RBI. Sarah Duncklee had 3 RBI and Anaiz Diaz (So. Tampa, FL) knocked in two runners for UMPI. Strout, Hansen and Duncklee each had doubles. Melissa Cochrane and Madison Ovadek each had 2 hits for Mass Maritime.
Buzzard's Bay, MA – The Owls completed the sweep over Mass Maritime in fine fashion pounding out 17 hits on their way to a 15 to 1 victory to improve their early season record to (8-4).
Pitcher Brookelynn Garcia got the win on the mound in the 2nd game as well, going 5 innings, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 1 for Me-Presque Isle.
The Owls jumped out to a 2 to 0 lead in the 1st inning when Marissa Valdivia-Reagle brought home Jordi Legassie on an infield hit. Reagle would advance on a throwing error and then later score on another infield hit, this time by Sarah Duncklee.
In the bottom of the inning Malarie Pittsley would connect for a solo homer to give the Buccaneers' their lone run of the ballgame.
UMPI's Sarah Duncklee would drive a 2-RBI triple as the Owls scored 3 times and increased their lead to 5 to 1. Duncklee would have a RBI single in the 4th and add a 3-run homerun to left field in the 7th and finish the day with an incredible 8 RBI's.
Next up: The Owls will travel to Boston next weekend to play a doubleheader at Pine Manor on March 30th at 1:00 and 3:00 PM. UMPI will face Newbury College on March 31st for two games at 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
