Myrtle Beach, SC - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Softball Team (5-3) swept Sewanee (2-18) on Thursday afternoon in a doubleheader played at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Owls edged the Tigers 6 to 5 in the opener when they scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning and then went on to win Game #2 by a 13 to 6 score.
In the first game of the day UMPI spotted Sewanee a 5 to 0 lead early which the Tigers carried into the 4th inning. In the bottom of the 4th the Owls got on the scoreboard when Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ) scored on a RBI single up the middle by Yvonne Hartridge (Jr. Bronx, NY). Roni Shaw So. Payette, ID) followed by knocking in two temmates when she ripped a triple to left field. Anaiz Diaz then doubled just inside the 3rd base bag to score Shaw and get UMPI to within 5 to 4.
In the dramatic 7th inning Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) scored to tie the game when Hartridge reached on an infield error on a groundball to shortstop. Sarah Duncklee moved up to 3rd base on the error. Roni Shaw then came through with a key basehit to leftfield to plate Duncklee with the game winning run.
Brookelynn Garcia (So. Torrance, CA) pitched the first 3 innings for Me-Presque Isle and Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (1-1) came on to finish the game, pitching four frames, allowing no runs on 3 hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts to get the win on the mound. Kendrell Goodwin (2-13) took the loss on the mound for Sewanee.
UMPI pounded out 14 hits on the game. 3rd baseman Anaiz Diaz (So. Tampa, FL) recorded 3 hits and had an RBI for the Owls while Jordan Hansen (Fr. Phillips, NE), Reagle, Hartridge and Shaw each had 2 hits. Hartridge had 2 RBI and Shaw 3 RBI. Centerfielder Peri Prestwood had 3 hits for the Tigers including a triple and 2 RBI.
Myrtle Beach, SC - In the 2nd game the Owls held a slim 4 to 3 lead going into the 6th inning when they erupted for 8 runs to put the game out of reach on their way to a 13 to 6 victory. The UMPI bats were potent as the Team belted out 16 hits in Game #2.
UMaine-Presque Isle went up 4 to in the 3rd inning when Sarah Duncklee scored on a Yvonne Hartridge double and Melanee Terry scored on a Madison Exferd (So. La Grand, OR) single. The Owls opened the game up in the 6th inning on a Jordi Legassie (Sr. Presque Isle, M) RBI single scoring Roni Shaw. Duncklee and Alyssa Merone (So. Staten Island, NY) each followed with RBI singles and Hartridge knocked in 2 runs with a double. Exferd finished off the 6th inning with a RBI single plating Hartridge.
Exferd and Legassie each had 3 hits while Hartridge had 2 doubles and 4 RBI to pace UMPI.
Next up: UMPI will play Kentucky Christian at 9:30 AM and Southern Vermont at 11:30 AM on Friday before heading North to Massachusetts for weekend games.
