Myrtle Beach, SC - The UMPI Owls (3-3) had a great day on the diamond Wednesday with wins over Southern Vermont and Principia College in Myrtle Beach.
In the first game of the day Me-Presque Isle got a strong pitching performance from Brookelynn Garcia, solid defense, and 14 hits as a team on their way to a 10 to2 win over Southern Vermont (4-3).
The Owls had a slim 1 to 0 advantage entering the 4th inning when they scored 2 runs on RBI singles by Yvonne Hartridge (Jr. Bronx, NY) and Anaiz Diaz (So. Tampa, FL. Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) hit a solo homer in the 5th inning and the Owls went up 4 to 0. UMPI put the game away in the 6th inning highlighted by a 3-run double from Jordan Hansen (Fr. Phillips, NE) and an RBI single by Valdivia-Reagle.
Garcia (So. Torrance, CA) hurled all 6 innings for UMPI allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits, 3 walks and striking out 8. The Owls defense played errorless ball behind Garcia. Melanee Terry (So. Moreno, CA) had 2 doubles and an RBI, while Hansen had 3 RBI and Valdivia-Reagle knocked in 2 runs.
For the Mountaineers leftfielder Taylor Jarosz had a 2-RBI single and catcher Jayden Allinson had 2 hits including a double.
Game #2: Principia College (3-7) of Elsah, Illinois got off to a quick start against the Owls, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning before UMPI responded with 1 run in the 2nd inning, 2 runs in the 3rd to tie it up and then 4 runs in both the 4th and 5th innings on their way an 11 to 3 victory.
Principia got the early lead behind an RBI single from Alyssa Hudenurg and a RBI double by junior catcher Lauren Daugherty.
UMPI scored their first run when Roni Shaw (So. Payette, ID)) brought in Mel Terry (So. Moreno, CA) with an RBI single in the 2nd inning. In the 3rd the Owls scored when Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ) plated Jordan Hansen (Fr. Phillips, NE) with a sacrifice fly and Mel Terry connected for an RBI single scoring Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (So. Seattle, WA). In the 4th inning Valdivia-Reagle singled bringing in 2 Owl runs and Duncklee added a RBI single. Yvonne Hartridge (Jr. Bronx, NY) plated Duncklee with an RBI double and a 7 to 3 lead.
UMPI scored 4 more runs in the 5th inning highlighted by a 2 RBI double from Valdivia-Reaagle who finished the game with 4 RBI.
Brookelynn Garcia got the win on the hill for the Owls going 5 innings giving up 5 hits, 3 runs and recording 2 strikeouts.
