Rutland, VT – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls began their weekend of doubleheaders vs. Saint Joseph Vermont Fighting Saints in a split, winning big in a game one shut out 9-0, and losing the second 7-6.
The Owls defense came up big in game one, only allowing two hits with zero errors in the five-inning game. Sara Packard (St. Albans, ME) led the way on the mound, pitching all five innings with two strikeouts earning the win.
Scoring efficiently, the Owls finished with nine runs off five hits. Batters put pressure on the Saints pitchers Jenna Crowley and McKenzie Ebert, as there were seven walks on the game. Marissa Reagle (Seattle, WA) earned two RBI's on the game with a double, Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA) added a double; Emily Page (Lincoln, ME) and Nicole Marucci (Naples, ME) each earned an RBI on the game.
The runs poured on early for both teams, as the game was tied 4-4 by the end of the fourth. Another rally by both teams brought the game to tie at six. It wasn't until the eighth inning that the Fighting Saints broke the tie and won the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Packard started on the mound for the Owls as Reagle relieved her pitching the final two innings only allowing one hit. Reagle added another double with one RBI in her strong performance on the day. Packard also hit a double and brought in one run, Terry and Anaiz Diaz (Tampa, FL) brought in a run a piece as well.
For the Fighting Saints, Vanessa Quigley, Lena Tirotta, and Shelby Fenton each doubled in the game. Tirottaa, Fenton, Timell Montgomery, and Ebert each earned an RBI on the game. While, Fenton earned the win on the mound, pitching all eight innings, striking out five batters with only one walk and allowing six hits.
The Owls will finish their weekend of games with anther doubleheader vs. the Fighting Saints, tomorrow, games at 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
